About two years ago, the Debian Web team agreed on creating a new homepage. We discussed a new structure and layout, and a lot of outdated pages have already been removed from the old web pages or cleaned up. We have created a plan of things we want to work on in short and medium term. (https://storm.debian.net/shared/eyaSgwVDbt6ApupHWjAfSFKW2h0Qdk0fznsj4wP-UB6) In December we have released the new shiny startpage, but we still made no progress on other issues. That's why we want to get external help starting with the following issues: 1. Improve content (= text) for the users and a better modern structure for some pages. More in detail this means 1.1 We need a review for the entire website's structure. 1.2 We need better understandable (from a user POV) and professional text and contents; a lot of subpages are outdated and need a review or even a rewrite. 1.3 We need a review and feedback from a users point of view. Too many pages are still written from developers for developers. 2. We want and really need a new central download page which is more comprehensible for end users. We need to merge the current various subpages about CDs, images, installer variants into *one* central place. The webteam got in touch with a professional writer which can help with the content and the rewrite of the download startpage. The name of person which we have contacted is Heike Jurzik, she has over 20 years of experience in writing about Open Source projects and software, first as a journalist and magazine editor, now she is working as a freelance copy writer. Heike has written seven books about Debian and is also familiar with the project and as well as the Debian community, that's why she is perfect from our view for solving the problems we currently see as web-team. Of course we've asked her to give us an estimate of how much time she will probably need. We've created a list of important URLs and we estimated the effort to around 20 hours for point 1 from above. Another list of less important URLs will need about 4 hours of work. Examples for important URLs are everything under /intro, /support, /doc and /doc/ddp. Another big task will be a completely new download section (see point 2 above). This will include a proposal for a structure that we will review and develop further with her. The final goal is an implementation of the download section by her, possibly using a new CSS mobile friendly framework. It's very hard to estimate the effort for the new download section. I hope that 5 days (= 40 hours) are fine. In total we have 64 hours. Her rate is 85 Eur/h, so we have in total 5440 Euro. As a member of the web team I like to ask for 5440 Euro for getting external help for these tasks. We believe it's a good idea to round up to 6000 Euro so we will have some more hours if needed. Laura Arjona Reina and Carsten Schönert from the web team agreed on this funding request.
