State of things now: ==================== - Other vendors like Red Hat have hardware spec programs - Some customers mandate the use of HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) - Debian doesn't offer anything Final goal: =========== Make it possible for a hardware vendor to display a "Debian Certified hardware" Proposed workflow for Debian: - A team for hardware certification is delegated by DPL - Member of this team (and only them) have the power to deliver hardware certificates - Anyone can certify hardware and report back to the hardware cert team so it may deliver a certificate Rules for hardware certification ================================ - No hardware needing things from non-free and contrib can be certified. $laptop with wifi non-free firmware can't be certified. - A minimum donation to Debian is demanded for obtaining any certificate. - The "tester" can be paid by the hardware manufacturer to do the testing work. The amount paid by the manufacturer shall pay for the time used to test, and may depend on the type of hardware (it's not the same to test a small USB dongle or a full laptop/server). - Shipping (back and forth) of hardware *must* be at the charge of hardware manufacturer - Hardware is certified for a given existing stable version of Debian. Todo after debconf: =================== - Andy to write a contract for hardware vendors, where it's written: * How the vendor can use the "Debian certified hardware" logo * Valid time scales for cert * Variance of the product - Send the contract to debian-legal@l.d.o - Pabs to setup a landing page on www.debian.org for hardware certification program - mwei and czchen to set up a hardware lab - write a report of the BoF to debian-project - prepare art work for the logo - zigo to ask listsmasters for a public list Hardware cert reports must contain: - List of components the hardware contain (wifi, video, network chip numbers, etc.) Volunteer in the team: - pabs@debian.org - andy rattusrattus@debian.org - Yao Wei - czchen@d.o
